Created by the Board of Directors in 1995 to honor the President and Michigan Sports Hall of Fame inductee, the Gerald R. Ford award is presented annually to a deserving member of the statewide community who has demonstrated extraordinary leadership, vision and has made significant contributions in sports or sports related fields, enhanced the image of sports and whose business activities have improved the quality of life for the people of Michigan.

Previous Ford Award recipients include such luminaries as Roger Penske, Dennis Archer, Peter Karmanos, J.P. McCarthy, Hoot McInerney, Mike and Marian Ilitch, Tom Wilson, Kathy Beauregard, and Grand Rapids legend Marty Allen.

The 2013 recipient is long time Grand Rapids amateur baseball manager, sponsor, supporter and scout Bob Sullivan. Founded in 1953, the Grand Rapids Sullivans went on to win numerous world championships over the next four decades and saw over 50 alumni play in the major leagues including such West Michigan natives Mickey Stanley, Jim Kaat and Dave Rozema. He also served as a scout for the Detroit Tigers for many years.

Bob will receive the coveted Gerald R. Ford award at a ceremony presented by the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame and sponsored by Berger Chevrolet to be held on Thursday, December 5 at the Riverfront Hotel. The private, VIP reception hosted by event honorary chairman Peter Secchia will begin at 5:30, with a strolling supper featuring elegant carving stations to be served at 6. Following the reception, the award ceremony will feature Jack Doles as the emcee as well as a custom video presentation and longtime professional player and coach Phil Regan will deliver the keynote speech.
