David Lynn Holmes

Producer of winners, record-holders, Olympic champions and in finest coaching tradition, men of character. Holmes was Wayne's first Athletic Director and "Coach of Everything" starting when school became a junior college with 226 students in 1917. In 1929 confined coaching track, cross country with his directorship and on retirement school's enrollment reache 20,000. In 12 years coaching basketball, his teams won 129, lost 66. His '27-'28 team winning 18, lost 1. His 11 football teams were 35-35-9 including 4-0-0 in '18 and 6-0-2 in '21. Nationally recognized in track, authorized many articles, devised coaching systems, designed starting blocks and hurdles. Eastern HS A.D. 1914, Cass HS AD and Coach All Sports '14-'17. Inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1975.
